The last time I went home to Ohio, I knew that I had to have my mother take some photos for me. Why? Because when she’s holding my Canon Rebel T2i camera and I’m in front of it, photography magic happens! We have that Russell James/Victoria’s Secret model setup where I’m uber comfortable so the shot gets got relatively quickly.
For this particular photo taking session, I decided I wanted to venture into a space that was familiar in a way but still a mystery. My parents have both a prairie trail and railroad that runs parallel to each other through the quiet neighborhood they call home. When I lived there, I’d walk the trail but would never go on the tracks. Something always told me to never go on the tracks. It probably goes back to all of the lessons I was taught growing up (ie: don’t talk to strangers, don’t lose your library card and, of course, don’t play on the train tracks).
As far as I know, the railroad is inactive as I have never seen or heard a train barreling by. With this little nugget banging around in my head, I informed my family’s matriarch that we would be taking it to the next level and have a fashion party on the tracks! To my surprise, she was more down for this than White people who still think it’s acceptable to do blackface (Julianne Hough, I’m looking at you). It was over in a flash but these are probably some of my favorite photos The Matriarch has taken of me thus far in her unofficial career as a fashion photographer.
